Free Skate

OSHAWA: Mar. 07, 2010: The annual Optimist Club of Oshawa members FREE public skate has a new twist for their Sun. Mar. 07 outing. A special prepared Opti-Pancakes Buffet is being offered by Optimist members at the Children’s Arena.

Currently the longest standing arena in Oshawa was build in the 1950’s after the old Hambley Arena burnt down in Sept. 1953. This venue features the best ice surface in the city.

We choose the Children’s venue as the works in conjunction with the Optimist mandate of being a “Friend Of Youth” organization.’ Serving our youth and community is what the Optimist are all about’ said Stephen Hambley the clubs 29th president.

Each month the local service club endorses community events to operate. In February two Durham College varsity athletics students Jordan Sutherland (Soccer) and Courtney Small (Basketball) received $1,000.00 in scholarship funding in memory of deceased Optimist members Thomas A. Scero and Sydney H. Breland. Speaking of our good friends at Durham College and the University of Ontario (UOIT) Scott Dennis is dispatching the team’s mascot to assistant in the skate.

Future planned community events are the Durham Region Community Contest For the Death & Hard of Hearing (CCDHH) and Blast Ball-’T'Ball tournament for youngsters ages 3 to 9.

The FREE Skate will commence at 12 noon until 1:45 pm (the normal public skate operation hours). The cost for skating will be a donation of a non-perishable food item for the Salvation Food Bank in Oshawa. In return the patrons will receive a FREE family skate and a special prepared Pancake Buffet to be served from 11:30 am till 1.30 pm.

In previous years, this public community event has been very successful.
