TORONTO, Feb 25: Successful triple by- pass heart surgery was completed at St. Michaels Hospital in Toronto by Doctor Latter on long time Car Classic guru and Optimist Monday Nite Euchre stud player Ronald ‘Batman’ Hele. It’s been quite a week for the retired General Motors employee, Peter Pniauskas his long time friend has been a strong supporter of Ron and his wife Irene during this entire week long ordeal. He’s been with him every supporting his long time and loyal friend.
Last week-end, he entered Lakeridge Hospital (Oshawa General) via a ‘911′ ambulance on Sat. Feb 20 complaining of having a shortness of breath. He spent Saturday and Sunday in emergency as OGH had no beds available. On Mon. (Feb 22) he was taken to Scarborough Hospital via ambulance for further testing and returned back to Oshawa that same evening late. Finally on Tues. Oshawa awarded him a bed on the 4th floor
The test conducted in Scarborough proved he had suffered a heart attack with three artery problems. One was pronounced dead and non-operation, one was blocked 70% and the third by 50 %.
At this point, he was informed surgery was required at a undetermined venue. Late Wed Feb 24 information filtered down that Doctor Latter would operate in Scarborough at 1:30 pm on Thur (Feb 25) The location was switched to St. Michaels for 4:30 pm than adjusted again t0 1:30 pm. The surgery normally take between three to four hours.
He required a litre of blood during surgery which has been described as successful, however he suffered permanent heart problems. Further reports indicated his quality of life will improve and dispute remaining on self fuelled oxygen temporally. He is expected to return home late next week.

- OSHAWA, Feb 22nd; Sandy Crosbie is a happy bus driver during the day light hours than switchs gears into a increditable Optimist Monday Euchre stud during the pm time frame at Johnny’s Original Eatery – better known at Oshawa Optimist headquarters. He was uncanny scoring 95 individual points in nailing a first place finish and collected $20.00 in prize money at the weekly fundraiser for Youth events within Oshawa.
A happy-go-lucky Scotsman from Glasgow produced six lone hands and enjoyed double digit scores with side-kick partners Greg Bamber his neariest rival with 91 points, Devid Debowsky, Jim Brooks and Dave Stoliker. It took a 16 point performance in his 10th and final game to squeeze out the triumph. Oddity his partner was Bamber. Other top ten point getters where host Johnny Milosh 89, Donald Richardson 88, Gary Smith 84, Michael Logan 88, david Stoliker 78, Gloria Logan 75, Neil Metcalf 74 and Jim Brooks 72.
GLORIA LOGAN REMARKABLE
Last week’s (Feb 15) top point getter Gloria Logan is probably the steadiest player. It showed again this week claimed the leadership in the prestigious stat percentage point per game. A quiet individual, the day time accountant seems to go unnoticed yet ranked in the top ten again. “Glo” is one of the best including the so-called experts the other gender. She placed in 8th spot out of 32 players. Her average now stands at an amazing 70;47%. To qualify for this title a player must appear in 75% of the scheduled game. Her accumulative YTD standings are 19 games plated, 33 lone hands and total point showing of 1,339. Logan is like the rock of gilibater. A special prize is awarded annually.
Euchre resumes next Monday, March lst. The first of ten games starts 7 pm.

CROSBIE’S BINGO DEBUT A SUCCESS

OSHAWA, Feb 16: You can give Elizabeth and Sandy Crosbie a A+ on the Optimist Report Card for a job well done during their solo flight at operating the monthly fundraising bingo for the Optimist Club of Oshawa held at Red Barn Bingo Hall. The NEW bingo co-chair couple passed with flying colours. They’re both ambitious who devote unlimited time at being accurate.
After a few months of training, the Crosbie have become official co-chairs. They have replaced v. Bbeteran’s – current president Stephen Hambley and secretary Jim Shaw. Both have endorsed the nre co-chairs involvement. Hambley and Shaw have been operating Optimist Club of Oshawa bingo’s for the past 15 years.
‘It’s time for those guys to have a break’ remarked president elect Sybil Dewhurst. Both are burnt out from doing to much. the Hambley and Shaw will alternate supplying experience support until the spring making the transfer is completely smooth.
Receiving strong volunteer support from Eric Goodwin, Peter Pniauskas, Sybil Dewhurst and Marjorie Ogden the operation went smoothly. Both Stephen Hambley and Jim Shaw served as advisors and provided teaching skills.
A total 81 customers attended the late night session. Future bingo’s are scheduled for March and April under the current license.
Hopefully when the new license is issued their is a possibility of a new start time for Oshawa Optimist operated bingo’s.

OSHAWA, Feb 15: Back to back triumphs are unusual at the weekly Monday, Optimist Club of Oshawa members sponsors Progressive Euchre. On “Family Day” holiday weekend the husband and wife combo’s on Gloria and Mike Logan while Elizabeth and Sandy Crosbie made everyone believers.
Gloria, claimed top billing posting a hard fought battle for the “most points” but prevailed by a single point thanks to scoring an amazing 19 points in the 9th game to outnose Stevie Milosh 83 to 82 points. A week prior her husband Mike registered 92 points for the top honours.
On the season, Logan who works as an accountant currently shares a second tie with Pat Passfield with 1,259 accumulative YTD points only 33 back of pace setter Bob Burtinsky at 1292 points. Her strong performance permitted her to leapfrogged her into second place with a sparkling 70.22% point per game average.
Meanwhile on the flip side of the spectrum, Elizabeth and Sandy Crosbie are rolling in the cash. This week, Sandy claimed $59.00 on 50/50 ticket number 244. It was just a week earlier Elizabeth pocketed $67.50 giving this happy couple winnings of $126.50.
It’s going to be a battle to the end in the individual lone hands race. Ron Hele just back from a two week Caribbean cruise scored 5 lone hand efforts to give him 45 on the season. Hele the defending two time champion hope to retain his crown. Since the season started Bob Burtinsky has set the pace. He now has 50 with Jim Durval 49 and David Debosky with 47 are sandwiched in between.

It’s the 44th annual Super Bowl for the National Football Championship and the Optimist Super Bowl Party is a go. Doors will open at 4:00 pm sharp. Two of the best team ever are pitted against each other - New Orleans Saints playing the Indianapolis Colts. It’s should be great game and your attendance will make it even better.

Oshawa, Jan 25; Stevie “The Worm” Milosh the youngest Optimist Monday nite Professive Euchre player at 24 has finally grabbed the first place spotlight. He claimed top spot during week 19 action. The youngest son of the Eatery’s owner/operator father Johnny turned in a awesome display scoring 89 points. That’s nine better than his nearest rival Jim Duval who scored a 82. Other superb scores came from David Conway 75, the improving Neil Metcalf and reliable Pat Brook both registering 73 points apiece while Michael Horner checked in at 72 followed by a three way deadlock involvement Don Richardson, Gloria Logan and Kenny Graves each with 70.FIVE ADDITIONS TO 1k CIRCLE
It’s a monkey see, monkey du scenario with the Y.T.D. points category. First it was Ron ‘Batman’ Hele breaking into the century club followed by Pat ‘Baba’ Passfield last week reaching the coveted plateau. Now five more monkies have climbed aboard the century club in points. Jim Duval 1,062, Gloria Logan 1,046, Bob ‘Dirt’ Burtinsky 1,042, David Conway 1,042 and Jim Brooks 1,006 are over the top.
Hele does remain in first place with 1,122 points followed by runner Passfield at 1,074. Hele’s first place hold may be short lived as he departs for a two week vacation cruising the Carribean while Passfield has a undetermined surgery date for next month to repair her hip and knees.
CONWAY RETAINS PERCENTAGE LEADERSHIP
For the second consecutive week veteran David Conway has hung onto to his leadership in the presitigious percentage race. He boast a solid 72.21% game percentage. Hot on his heals are Jim Brooks 71.85% David Stoliker 71.25%, Also in contention are Gloria Logan, Bob ‘Dirt’ Burtinsky, and Dave Dobosky.

“HATS-OFF” to veteran Euchre player and Optimist volunteer deluxe Cathy Kehoe. She’s working with the Sofmac Shoe Co aiding needy families in Haiti . The citizens of his country are in dire-need of footwear. At Euchre Jan 25th Kehoe collected 32 pairs of shoes donated by the Optimist Monday Euchre Club after responded from a late Email request just two hours in advance.

IS ‘BROOKER’ REGAINING HIS OLD FORM AT OPTIMIST MONDAY NITE EUCHRE

OSHAWA, Jan 18th: Is veteran Optimist Monday Nite Euchre player John “Brooke’ getting set for a late season end rush to become the top Euchre player for 2010? It certainly looks so. Buried in the doldrums the first have of the seasons, “Brooker” as he his known to fellow players seems to have kick started his comeback efforts.
The retired Durham Catholic School board custodian scored a 82 point effort- 39 points more than his Jan. 11th effort to state that’s back into the hunt. As a results his splendid showing gained him $20.00 of Opti-Cash. It was a superb showing scoring four lone hands and a trio of double digit wins while toiling along side his father and mentor Ralph “Red”, Jan “Hon’ Lynch and Ruth Bell. Affectionly known as Brooker, he now has 22 lone hands on the year plus a respectable percentage average of 68.00%. Right behind Brooks were Optimist president Stephen Hambley and his dad Red Brooks each with 78 points.
BABA JOINS BATMAN IN 1k CIRCLE
Pat ‘Baba” Passfield has joined Ron Hele in the Century mark in points this season. She now has 1,010 points compared to the first place holder Hele at 1,063. Expected this select group shorter are Bob ‘Dirt’ Burtinsky, Gloria Logan and Jimmie Durval. This trio could accomplish this as early as next Monday.
LEGROS GEORGE TAKES HOME 50/50 WINNINGS
Meanwhile David Conway has reclaimed first place in the all important percentage leadership board. Conway a former Oshawa Councillor boast a 72.00% compared to last week’s Dave Stoliker. Less than one percentage point separates the two. Stoliker is behind by 0.75% for his presitigious award. Other contenders are Bob Burtinsky, Jim Brooks, Bob Blair, Ron Hele, Peter Pniauskas, Jim Durval and the only female highly touted Gloria Logan.
