OSHAWA, March 8th: -It’s been 19 weeks in coming but Gordo Johnson finally achieved his year long wish nailing down first place at the weekly sponsored Optimist Club of Oshawa Monday Nite Euchre Recently retired, Gordo was wearing the biggest smile crumbling all the opposition  by
launched 88 points for his first ever record victory.  “He was like dancer doing his victory after
the millions on a ’649′ ticket.

Prior to Monday’s action, Johnson was an average a mid-fifty scorer however in recent weeks his totals has beem on the upward swing. Finally he has his breakout evening. On the year Johnson has improved tremoudously having 1,162 YTD accumulative points, 27 lone hands including a season high five on Mar 8, while jumping from 19th place on Mar lst result a 28 point increase. WOW he’s the man.  After 19 games played his average percentage is a respectable 59;66%

Other top ten finishers where Jim Duval 82, followed by a 3 way deadlock with Ruth Bell, Shirley Robinson, Geo. Hagerty each with 81 points. David Conway followed with 78, Ken (Balecher) Graves 77, Pat ‘Baba” Passfield 74, while our host Johnny Milosh, Optimist president Stephen Hambley and Greg Brooks each connected with 73 points apiece

Two time defending  champion Ron ‘Batman’ Hele  recovering from recent triple by pass surgery recover quicker just to retail his crown. He trails Duval by eleven and holds down 4th spot.
Meanwhile Duval is the “main guy” with the most points scored YTD. He’s accumulated 1,468 eight better than second place rival Gloria Logan.  Dobosky stated loud and clear to his buddy Duval in a prepared statement  – Next Week is Mind. Dobosky is in striking range to overtaking him – heck he smiled quipping the heck with friendship … I want to win’

HUBBA – NORMA WINS.. YTD PAYOUTS  HITS $5K

Who says that Super Max or the Lotto 649 has more winners. Sure we operate on a smaller scale in payouts but our weekly prize board does OK. ANOTHER LOGAN VICTORY

OSHAWA, March 01; If it isn’t one Logan claiming top billing than it’s the other.  Such is the finding a weeky Monday Nite Sponsored Optimist Bingo’s at Johnny’s Orginal Eatery.  This past Monday (Mar lst) it was hubby David claiming domestic bragging rights as the best Euchre player in the Logan household. He outscored 35 other players registering 83 points including a trioka of mammoth lone hands. He nailed the victory teaming up with partner David Debosky compilin 13 points in game 10. This is comparsion to the Team Canada triumph 3-2  in overtime win against Team USA. His other double digit scores where recorded with Jan ‘Hun” Lynch (12) and Gord’O'Johnson (11) as playmates.That troika of points accounting for 46 points good for 56% of his total score.
On the year “LeGros Mike” has 1,236 points, 34 lone hands and sparkling 61;80% per game in points. Certainly he’ll have the bragging rights in the Logan household this week.His lovely wife Gloria slipped 19 points this time around finishing up with a woeful 56 points after a 8th place finish on Feb 22.

Other top ten point makers included;- Cathy Kehoe 79.Bob Blair 77, John Brooks 74, Gary Smith 71, Miles Richardson 70, Neil’Farmer’ Metcalf 69 while Frances Hirst, Jan ‘Hun” Lynch, Jim Duval and Eric Goodwin all deadlocked in a 8th place draw each with 67 points.

‘GLO’ TOPS THE % LEADERBOARD
Despite playing second banana to her likeable hubby, Gloria Logan is still the front-runner in the most important category. She tops the percentage leader board with a nifty 69.75% holding a first place advantage over David Debosky who has vaulted into second place. ‘Dapper’ Dave trails by a mere 1.25%.Other potentional contenders are Jim Brooks 67.40%, Jim Duval 66.00%, Patricia Brooks 65.44%, Bob ‘Dirt’Burtinsky 64.04%, Neil ‘Farmer’ Metcalf 64.22%, Peter Pniauskas 63;85%, Eric ‘Bushwacker’ Goodwin 62.95% while the hospitalized Ron ‘Batman’ Hele is still in the top runingten despite missing the last couple weeks from a triple by-pass surgery owning a 62.83% mark.
To win this prestigious crown a player must have appeared in 75% of the schedule 2009-2010 season. With six weeks remaining (season ends on Apr 14th) it looks like a photo-finish will happen.
Meanwhile Gloria  does trail James Duval in the YTD total points scored. Jim has 1,386 while ‘Glo’ checks in with 1,385

MOST LONE HANDS A MO-TOWN BATTLE
“U” pick’em who will win the most lone hands on the season. James Duval or Bob ‘Dirt’ Burtinsky. They share the top rung each with 52. Both managed only a single LH’s effort during week 24 action. Right on their heels is David Debosky with 50. Other contenter’s are two time defending champ Ron ‘Batman’ Hele 45,Pat Brooks 42, Jim Brooks 41, Peter Pniauskas 39, Eric ‘Bushwacker’ Goodwin 36 Mike Logan 34 while John Brooks rests in 10th spot 21 back of the co-leaders.

‘BABA’ ADDS $51.00 TO HER POCKET BOOKS  YTD TOTAL STANDS $163.00

Pat ‘Baba’ Passfield has won her third 50/50 draw this season. On Mar 01 she took home $51.00 on ticket 6107 to increase her season’s windfall to $163.00. Previous recorded wins occurred opening night Sept 14 ($60.50) followed by $51.50 on Nov. 23. “The extra cash is appreciated’ smiled the noted desert maker. She has planned surgery in late May for hip and knee replacement. on her hip and knees.

HELE HAS SUCCESSFUL TRIPLE BY-PASS

TORONTO, Feb 25Successful triple by- pass heart surgery was completed at St. Michaels Hospital in Toronto by Doctor Latter on long time Car Classic guru and Optimist Monday Nite Euchre stud player Ronald ‘Batman’ Hele. It’s been quite a week for the retired General Motors employee,  Peter Pniauskas his long time friend has been a strong supporter of Ron and his wife Irene during this entire week long ordeal. He’s been with him every supporting his long time and loyal friend.

Last week-end, he entered Lakeridge Hospital (Oshawa General) via a ‘911′ ambulance on Sat. Feb 20 complaining of having a shortness of breath. He spent Saturday and Sunday in emergency as OGH had no beds available.  On Mon. (Feb 22) he was taken to Scarborough Hospital via ambulance for further testing and returned back to Oshawa that same evening late. Finally on Tues. Oshawa awarded him a bed on the 4th floor

The test conducted in Scarborough proved he had suffered a heart attack with three artery problems. One was pronounced dead and non-operation, one was blocked 70% and the third by 50 %.

At this point, he was informed surgery was required at a undetermined venue. Late Wed Feb 24 information filtered down that Doctor Latter would operate in Scarborough at 1:30 pm on Thur (Feb 25) The location was switched to St. Michaels for 4:30 pm than adjusted again t0 1:30 pm. The surgery normally take between three to four hours.

He required a litre of blood during surgery which has been described as successful, however he suffered permanent heart problems.  Further reports indicated his quality of life will improve and dispute remaining on self fuelled oxygen temporally. He is expected to return home late next week.

OSHAWA, Feb 22nd; Sandy Crosbie is a happy bus driver during the day light hours than switchs gears into a increditable Optimist Monday Euchre stud during the pm time frame at Johnny’s Original Eatery – better known at Oshawa Optimist headquarters. He was uncanny scoring 95 individual points in nailing a first place finish and collected $20.00 in prize money at the weekly fundraiser for Youth events within Oshawa.

A happy-go-lucky Scotsman from Glasgow produced six lone hands and enjoyed double digit scores with side-kick partners Greg Bamber his neariest  rival with 91 points, Devid Debowsky, Jim Brooks  and Dave Stoliker. It took a 16 point performance in his 10th and final game to squeeze out the triumph. Oddity his partner was Bamber. Other top ten point getters where host Johnny Milosh 89, Donald Richardson 88, Gary Smith 84, Michael Logan 88, david Stoliker 78, Gloria Logan 75, Neil Metcalf 74 and Jim Brooks 72.

GLORIA LOGAN REMARKABLE

Last week’s (Feb 15) top point getter Gloria Logan is probably the steadiest player. It showed again this week claimed the leadership in the prestigious stat percentage point per game. A quiet individual, the day time accountant seems to go unnoticed yet ranked in the top ten again. “Glo” is one of the best including the so-called experts the other gender. She placed in 8th spot out of 32 players. Her average now stands at  an amazing 70;47%. To qualify for this title a player must appear in 75% of the scheduled game. Her accumulative YTD standings are 19 games plated, 33 lone hands and total point showing of 1,339. Logan is like the rock of gilibater. A special prize is awarded annually.

Euchre resumes next Monday, March lst. The first of ten games starts 7 pm.

RON ‘BATMAN’ HELE RUSHED TO HOSPITAL

OSHAWA, Feb 20th; Ron Hele 76,was rushed to Lakeridge Health (Oshawa General Hospital) via ambulance at 5:00 pm (est) Saturday evening. The emergency call resulted from a ‘911′ call.
Hele who is affectingly know by his Optimist Monday Nite Euchre club team-matges as ‘Batman’ is expected to have an extended stay at OGH as doctors attempt to locate the reason for his shortness of breath. A series of test will be conducted.
Irene, stated her husband will probably will call OGH home for a mimimium of five days. He’ll spend this evening in the emergency ward until a bed becomes available. Irene further stated her husband had suffered a heart attack.
It was a week ago he and Irene both General Motors retires returned home from a two week cruise. As details are made available readers to our website will be advised.
Prayers and best wishes for a rapid recovery go out the Ron and Irene.


LOGAN’s & CROSBIE’s -BACK TO BACK

OSHAWA, Feb 15: Back to back triumphs are unusual at the weekly Monday, Optimist Club of Oshawa members sponsors Progressive Euchre. On “Family Day” holiday weekend the husband and wife combo’s on Gloria and Mike Logan while Elizabeth and Sandy Crosbie made everyone believers.

Gloria, claimed top billing posting a hard fought battle for the “most points” but prevailed by a single point thanks to scoring an amazing 19 points in the 9th game to outnose Stevie Milosh 83 to 82 points. A week  prior her husband Mike registered 92 points for the top honours.

On the season, Logan who works as an accountant currently shares a second tie with Pat Passfield with 1,259 accumulative YTD points only 33 back of pace setter Bob Burtinsky at 1292 points. Her strong performance permitted her to leapfrogged her into second place with a sparkling 70.22% point per game average.

Meanwhile on the flip side of the spectrum, Elizabeth and Sandy Crosbie are rolling in the cash. This week, Sandy claimed $59.00 on 50/50 ticket number 244. It was just a week earlier Elizabeth pocketed $67.50 giving this happy couple winnings of $126.50.

It’s going to be a battle to the end in the individual lone hands race. Ron Hele just back from a two week Caribbean cruise scored 5 lone hand efforts to give him 45 on the season. Hele the defending two time champion hope to retain his crown. Since the season started Bob Burtinsky has set the pace. He now has 50 with Jim Durval 49 and David Debosky with 47 are sandwiched in between.

‘THE WORM’ SQUEEZE INTO VICTORY LANE AT OPTIMIST MONDAY NITE EUCHRE

steve-editOshawa, Jan 25; Stevie “The Worm” Milosh the youngest Optimist Monday nite Professive Euchre player at 24 has finally grabbed the first place spotlight. He claimed top spot during week 19 action. The youngest son of the Eatery’s owner/operator father Johnny turned in a awesome display scoring 89 points. That’s nine better than his nearest rival Jim Duval who scored a 82. Other superb scores came from David Conway 75, the improving Neil Metcalf and reliable Pat Brook both registering 73 points apiece while Michael Horner checked in at 72 followed by a three way deadlock involvement Don Richardson, Gloria Logan and Kenny Graves each with 70.
Nicknamed ‘The Worm’ the University of Guelph graduate is in some cases three time his age. Many have watch ‘The Kid’ develop over the years, during his highschool days at McLaughlin and working in the restaurant with his father. It seems he’s alway been around working the Eatery. He’s done all facets and is a self taught superb chef.  Currently he’s  employed by the Toronto DominIon Bank in Oshawa.
During his victory march – Milosh Jr. produced three lone hands giving him 19 on the season. This he improved from an 11th place finished on Jan. 18th right to the top of the heap. Playing with Ted Kapuscinski, Bob Blair, Mike Horner, Pat Passfield they collectively combined for 59 points in double digit scores totalling 59 of his 89 points. His poorest effort came during game five managing a orphan point.

FIVE ADDITIONS TO 1k CIRCLE

It’s a monkey see, monkey du scenario with the Y.T.D. points category. First it was Ron ‘Batman’ Hele breaking into the century club followed by Pat ‘Baba’ Passfield last week reaching the coveted plateau. Now five more monkies have climbed aboard the century club in points. Jim Duval 1,062, Gloria Logan 1,046, Bob ‘Dirt’ Burtinsky 1,042,  David Conway 1,042 and Jim Brooks 1,006 are over the top.

Hele does remain in first place with 1,122 points followed by runner Passfield at 1,074. Hele’s first place hold may be short lived as he departs for a two week vacation cruising the Carribean while Passfield has a undetermined surgery date for next month to repair her hip and knees.

CONWAY RETAINS PERCENTAGE LEADERSHIP

For the second consecutive week veteran David Conway has hung onto to his leadership in the presitigious percentage race. He boast a solid 72.21% game percentage. Hot on his heals are Jim Brooks 71.85% David Stoliker 71.25%, Also in contention are Gloria Logan, Bob ‘Dirt’ Burtinsky, and Dave Dobosky.

“HATS-OFF” to veteran Euchre player and Optimist volunteer deluxe Cathy Kehoe. She’s working with the Sofmac Shoe Co aiding needy families in Haiti . The citizens of his country are in dire-need of footwear. At Euchre Jan 25th Kehoe collected 32  pairs of shoes donated by the Optimist Monday Euchre Club after responded from a late Email request just two hours in advance.

IS ‘BROOKER’ REGAINING HIS OLD FORM AT OPTIMIST MONDAY NITE EUCHRE

Euchre 5OSHAWA, Jan 18th: Is veteran Optimist Monday Nite Euchre player John  “Brooke’  getting set for a late season end rush to become the top Euchre player for 2010? It certainly looks so. Buried in the doldrums the first have of the seasons, “Brooker” as he his known to fellow players seems to have kick started his comeback efforts.

The retired Durham Catholic School board custodian scored a 82 point effort- 39 points more than his Jan. 11th effort to state that’s back into the hunt. As a results his splendid showing gained him $20.00 of Opti-Cash. It was a superb showing scoring four lone hands and a trio of double digit wins while toiling along side his father and mentor Ralph “Red”, Jan “Hon’ Lynch and Ruth Bell. Affectionly known as Brooker, he now has 22 lone hands on the year plus a respectable percentage average of 68.00%. Right behind Brooks were Optimist president Stephen Hambley and his dad Red Brooks each with 78 points.

BABA JOINS BATMAN IN 1k CIRCLE

Pat ‘Baba” Passfield has joined Ron Hele in the Century mark in points this season. She now has 1,010 points compared to the first place holder Hele at 1,063.  Expected this select group shorter are Bob ‘Dirt’ Burtinsky, Gloria Logan and Jimmie Durval. This trio could accomplish this as early as next Monday.

LEGROS GEORGE TAKES HOME 50/50 WINNINGS

Meanwhile David Conway has reclaimed first place in the all important percentage leadership board. Conway a former Oshawa Councillor boast a 72.00% compared to last week’s Dave Stoliker. Less than one percentage point separates the two. Stoliker is behind by 0.75% for his presitigious award. Other contenders are Bob Burtinsky, Jim Brooks, Bob Blair, Ron Hele, Peter Pniauskas, Jim Durval and the only female highly touted Gloria Logan.

OSHAWA,Jan 11th:  So you can’t pronouce his name or even spell it…. don’t worry it’s OK the magic word is KAPUSCINSKI - which means you’re a winner the first night out at the Optimist Club of Oshawa sponsored Progressive Euchre party.

His name  is pronounced KAP-U-SHINT-SKI (heck that’s a simple Irish name) but if that’s your hang-up he’ll answer to TED. He’s the latest winner collecting $20.00 of Optimist Club of Oshawa cash for claiming first place of the 36 players who completed. His bank manager is happy for his client whose on a fixed income. A retired Durham Region board of education employee was introduced to Opti-Euchre by his friend and fellow “Ukie” David Debosky. Last Wednesday (Jan 6) after celebrating Ukranian Christmas Debosky convinced  him of the coming out for a night of fun and cards.

“The unexpeced  windfall was great, but meeting the Optimist members and friends was important to me” remarked Kapper – everyone made me feel welcome – and that’s the important thing” he continued. Mr.’K’s’ collected 79 points covering his ten games including a trioka of double digits victories playing with his talented partners the hubby-wife Brook’s Pat and John along with Gord Johnson. He registered a pair of important lone hands during his 9th game.

HELE FIRST TO HIT  1K POINTS PLATEAU

Ron ‘Batman” Hele scored 72 points and became first player to reach the 1,000 point milestone this campaign. Acknowledged as one of the top players, Batman has stiff  completion from Pat ‘Baba’ Passfield at 953 points followed by Bob ‘Dirt’ Burtinsky 918, Gloria Logan 909.

DAVID  STOLIKER PACE SETTER IN PERCENTAGES

Fast improving ‘Super Dave” Stoliker has taken over the most important stat, first place in percentages per game. Currently he’s moved into first place with an impressive 73:27% per every ten games. At year’s end a special prize is awarded to the winner. To qualifty a player must appear in 75% of the scheduled games. This is the only fair way to declare the overall best player. By employing the 75% rule, this still allows time off for winter vacations and illness. Defending champ George Hagerty won a $100.00 gift card from Wal*Mart SuperCentre. He refused the price and donated it back to Optimist Club of Oshawa for their ongoing mandate helping the Youth of Oshawa.

KEN GRAVES WINS WEEKLY 50/50 PRIZE

Popular Kenny Graves jumped up quickly when his lucky number was called in the weekly 50/50 draw. His reward was $51.50 but his windfall was short lived when his wife Fay one of our volunteers stepped  in and thanked him for by a ticket. To date this popular game of chance has dispatched $952.00 in prize cash. Tickets can be puchased at the door prior to Euchre for $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00. Other valuable prizes are also awarded ie-two slice toaster, discounted golf books, auto emergency kit, flashlights, bottled water, windshield washer fluid etc. Four different players finished deadlocked for the nite’s most lone hands. Another corporate decision was accomplished when Margaret McFayden was presented with a bottle of Oshawa Optimist Napa Valley White Wine for her efforts via a coin flip.

FOSSUM SUFFERS HEART ATTACK

Veteran Gary Fossum who has missed the  2009-2010 Euchre season has suffered a  heart attack. After having successfull surgery removing disc from his back the Myrtle resident was scheduled to be released from Scarboro General Hosiptal on Jan 13th suffered a heart attack. Doctor Grant did a superb job minded his back problem with bolts and medal has ordered extra care for him. No home date has been forcasted since this latest problem. Once back on his feet the care-giving-patient role will be reversed. His wife Mary who works has been the care giver for her hubby  and father finally be permitted to have her hip and knee replacement surgery.Both have been missed this Euchre season and they aren’t expected to return until the 2010-2011 season starting in September 2010.

SUPER DAVE – TOP DOGS SCORES 90 PTS, GORD-0 NETS 50/50, BUSHWACKER ENJOYING HIS WINE

OSHAWA, Jan 4th: Plenty of suprpises as the  Optimist Club of Ozhawa sponsored Monday Nite Progressive Euchre resumed kicking off the second half at Johnny’s Original Eatery after a two week festive shutdown permitting the players to enjoy Christmas and New Years.

Super Dave Stoliker claimed the top point honours and $20.00 of Opti-Cash for finishing first place overall of the 36 players posting an impressive 90 points – that was two better than his nearest rival  the fast improving Cathy Kehoe who checked in with a nifty 88.

Playing in his first year, Stoliker has been impressive since day on. He now boasts a 74:70% per game having played ten games YTD.

What’s probably more impressive he jumped 33rd spot to first. He’s accumulated 744 points, 19 YTD Lone hands.At the Jan 4th showcase he started and finished slowly but during the middle games he was awesome. Biggest head occured after intrmission.

“It must have been that tasty and delicious deserts that kick-started me” quipped the happy first place finisher. Teaming up with Pat Brooks, Marjorie Ogden and Bob “Dirt” Burtinsky as his capable partners this trioka recorded a trio of double digit victories. Earlier playing with caggy veteran Neil Metcalf collectively with 13 points.

Rapid improved Kehoe placed a disappointing second. She’s really improved her game playing with confidence. Another upstart Brian Tremblay vontinues his strong – attemping to depart a season long slump since the season opened last September. Overall he finished deadlock for a third place tie. Seems Tremblay has been fighting a nasyt flu which has directly hurt his scores.

GORD-O NETS $59.00

Retired Gordie Johnson who finds himself on a fixed income  since January lst has solved the problem living on a budget. First game back and he captured the weekly 50/50 draw worth $59.00. Earlier in the evening his wife and daughter visited Johnny’s for supper. “I guess I was lucky” said Gord-o, they departed before the intermission announced the Optimist windfall was announced.  Cash pay-outs after 15 weeks of play was resulted in payoffs of $901.00.

BUSH WACKER ENJOYING HIS WINE

Eric ‘Bushwacker’ Goodwin again lived up to his Optimist nicknamed. The finished in a three way tied with the nites most lone hands with four. Sharing the spotlight with him was Patricia Books and Brian Tremblay. It took a coin flip to decide who would the victor of the Optimist Napa Valley produced white wine.  Always a solid player who is also known to his card playing friends as the “Quiet Man” His YTD totals are impressive with a individual per game point average if 63:58%. He joined from 37th position on Dec 14th to 15th this time around. He has totalled 24 LH’s.

FOSSUM SET FOR FRIDAY SURGERY.

Likeable Gary Fossum will finally have his muched needed  back surgery. He’s missed the entire ‘09-’10 Optimist Euchre season living in plain. The operation will be conducted on Friday Janary 8th at Scarborough General Hospital. Once he’s  completely recovered he’ll returned to the Euchre table. His wife Mary whose his capable caregiver will be having hip/knee surgery once Gary has resolved his problems. Your fellow players have missed both of you this  campaign.

Action resumes Jan 11th at Johnny’s Eatery located at 850 King St. West (905-576-7748) We excpect player to report by 6:50 pm permitting the games to begin at 7:00 pm sharp. Admission price is $10.00 which includes ten games, a intermission tasty lunch with desert plus all the coffee, tea or hot chocolate you require.
